Today’s Recommended Listening:

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992)
Quartet for the End of Time: V. Louange a l’Eternite de Jesus
Anner Bylsma / Reinbert de Leeuw
[Spotify] - 10 minutes

Messiaen wrote this work for piano, clarinet, violin, and cello in a Prisoner-Of-War camp during world war 2. The piece is stunning and demands repeat listens. This movement only has cello and piano and is super slow. if I remember, this one-page piece - which takes 10 minutes to play - is only one page long and the tempo marking is, the tempo marking is Infinitement Lent (infinitely slow).

The work is incredible and the four-instrument configuration is now common enough that we refer to it colloquially as “for Messiaen quartet.”

I had no idea this recording existed until very recently and it was super exciting - Bylsma is best known as a baroque-era specialist (we all study and scrutinize his Bach recordings) and his recording of this piece is just stunning. If you want fantastic Vivaldi Sonatas, CPE Bach Concertos, Boccherini Concertos, etc., Bylsma is your guy.

What to explore next:

  1. JS Bach | Cello Suites [Bylsma recording]

  2. Luigi Boccherini | Cello Concerto #10 [Bylsma recording]

  3. Messiaen | Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jesus for piano [Pierre-Laurent Aimard]

See you tomorrow!
