WHY MOST CELLISTS STALL ON POPPER

  1. No pedagogical order—published for publishers, not learners.

  2. Solo grind—without deadlines, weeks turn into years.

  3. Technique ≠ practice system—“play it again” isn’t a method.

PPPP fixes all three—so you save time and level-up.

ACCORDIONS FOR LONG-FORM DEPTH

🥇 Why I Co-Created a New Popper Edition with Richard Aaron

  • I studied for 4 years under Prof. Richard Aaron at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Michigan.

Every week as freshmen and sophomore, all the cellists in my class played a Popper Etude for each other on Saturday morning at 8:30am.

After I graduated, he asked if I wanted to co-edit a new edition of the etudes specifically designed to help students learn faster.

Together we went through 17 complete drafts and at the end, we had created an edition unlike any other. It includes rehearsal laters, repeats and codas. It clarifies key signatures, uses fingerings and bowings that reflect the latest pedagogical philosophies, and introduced the world to a completely new notation to practice shifting.

  • I graduated from U of M in 2008 as a triple major in Cello Performance, Music Theory, and Music History, summa cum laude.

Since then, I’ve taught cello or more than 15,000 hours using my own comprehensive cello method, Cellosophy, used by cello teachers across the world.

I’ve had students as young as 10 years old master all 40 Popper Etudes - from memory.

  • I’ve played the complete standard cello repertoire and been principal cellist for a number of orchestras.

Since 2010, however, I have primarily been a recitalist and chamber musician. I’ve premiered dozens of new works and specialize in brand new contemporary repertoire.

Most of what I play now involves quarter tones, nested tuplets, scordatura, alternative intonation systems, etc.

In 2024 I put together a memorial festival of 40 pieces of chamber music of the late Kaija Saariaho, and was honored to give the US premiere of a number of her works.

I’m also an active composer. Highlights of my recent work include my Soliloquy for 5-cellos, which is essentially a 38-minute cello concerto with cello quartet.

Who is the Popper Course for?

Perfect for advanced high-school, conservatory & pro cellists ready to record weekly check-ins.
Not for beginners, hobbyists, or anyone unwilling to schedule 90 min/day.

The students, from Singapore, Australia, and the US have included:

  • Advanced high school students:
working to perfect their technique before college auditions

  • Undergraduate cello majors
working to speed up their learning time

  • Advanced adult amateur cellists
trying to feel more comfortable community orchestras

  • Professionals preparing for major auditions
    working to perfect their preparation

  • Professionals with a master’s from a conservatory
improving their pedagogy and systematizing their practice - some were so impressed with the course that they’ve converted their studio of 30+ students to my Cellosophy Method.

  • International soloist / head of university string department
refining their mastery - they were so impressed with it they studied with me privately while prepping for concerto appearances, too.
